Gairloch Tourist Information Centre
The Gairloch Tourist Information Centre is located next to the Gairloch Community Centre.
It is managed by Gairloch and Loch Ewe Action Forum (GALE) in partnership with VisitScotland and carries all relevant information for VisitScotland members’ accommodation and services. In addition, the staff will endeavour to answer any queries you may have regarding the local area or any other area of Scotland that you intend to visit. Whatever your question we will do our best to give you a satisfactory answer!
Leaflets detailing local facilities and attractions are available free of charge and a list of local events is updated each week. A full colour free brochure can be obtained which lists amenities available throughout the Highlands area.
As a charity, GALE relies upon donations and fundraising efforts. For this reason all items in the TIC shop are sold to help finance the work of GALE and the continued manning of the TIC. The more items we sell the more hours we can remain open. It is our aim to offer a service 7 days a week in peak season and to remain open throughout the year even if only on a restricted basis.
The shop sells a wide range of books and maps, including walking guides, CDs, postcards, calendars, cards and even wet weather gear. In an effort to promote local skills it also stocks many hand crafted cards and gifts that have been produced locally to a high standard and, in some cases, only available within the local area.
Feel free to call in and browse and if you have any comments please let us know! You may find just what you are looking for and be helping a local charity as you buy. If you are not able to visit us in person, then why not browse the selection of items available mail order from our online shop.

Books by BEE JAY © John (Jackie) Fox
A selection of books by Stanley Barker Johnson (known as BEE JAY) are now available in a reprinted form from John (Jackie) Fox at 10 Glebe Park, Gairloch, Ross-shire, IV21 2DE. Tel/Fax 01445 712452 Tel: 01445 712404 Fax: 01445 712747 Email: Bjhighlandbooks@aol.com
Stanley Barker Johnson’s books sold over 25,000 copies all over the world. Although his books were written many years ago, the history and legends he wrote about are already fixed in time, and the hills and glens and other places he wrote about are still there in all their everlasting glory. Gairloch is much the same as in his day, a few extra houses here and there. Only in 2006 did Glendocherty become a double track road, leading through Kinlochewe, by the shores of magnificent Loch Maree to our village, Gairloch, Wester Ross.
SCOTLAND’S SHANGRI-LA Rapture in the Highlands 1972 Based upon the story of Lost Horizon, it compares the isolation and tranquillity of the mythical Tibetan Shangri-La with Sutherland and Wester Ross. In 360 pages, Bee Jay brings to life the beautiful scenery, and little known history of the area. Myths are exploded, in particular the truth about the capture of the Marquis of Montrose in 1650 at Ardvreck Castle. A theme further explored in Three Centuries of Falsehood. Indeed, it was this evidenced which finally proved, after 320 years, that Neil MacLeod, XI Baron of Assynt did not betray Montrose. The days of the Covenanters and the Clearances are vividly portrayed. Truly, a fascinating book.
THOUGHTS INSPIRED IN SHANGRI-LA 1975 A sequel to Scotland’s Shangri-La. A collection of thoughts, some prose, some poetry. Comments on everything from the oil industry to the charms of Loch Maree. Sadly, the last book he produced.
ARDVRECK’S SHAME (3 Centuries of Falsehood Exposed) 1970 A small 24 page booklet dealing with the capture of the Marquis of Montrose at Ardvreck Castle. This booklet completely explodes the myth that Montrose was betrayed by Neil MacLeod, XI Baron of Assynt, a fact that was proven and upheld by the Law Lords. Montrose was taken from Ardvreck and hanged. After his death MacLeod was accused of being a traitor and this false image had been carried forward across the centuries. For anyone interested in this period of history Bee Jay’s account is invaluable.
CHILDHOOD DAYS IN ST KILDA 1973 This is the most unique story of St Kilda’s vanished days. It is a story of a missionary’s daughter carried ashore at the tender age of 5 to this outpost in the wild ocean. Her memories, half a century later, are retold by Bee Jay as only he can. A 45-page book containing many old photos, this book will delight any reader. Indeed, in 1988 David A Quine, author of St Kilda Portraits, wrote to Bee Jay’s widow Margaret, thanking her for letting him quote at some length from Bee Jay’s book on St Kilda.
HIGHLAND PEARLS
Fist published in 1969 and now reprinted in 2007 in a limited edition.
AND IT CAME TO PASS 1963 This is an absorbing book, written in an easy yet distinctive style. Every chapter, indeed every page, contains fascinating characters, charm and humour. Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie AS IT REALLY WAS. A 250 page saga of the North West.
WESTER ROSS AND SKYE 1963 This book extols the country and the people as never before. In Bee Jay’s words “Visitors return year after year to this enchanting land at the end of the rainbow that offers so much of everything to everybody at all times of the year”. Nothing much has changed since 1963 except Glendocherty is now finally a double track road!
END OF THE RAINBOW 1964 A moving true-to-life story embracing the mystic East where Bee Jay lived and worked for 38 Years, Mull and Gairloch. A simple love story full of Highland life and pathos, with vivid descriptions of the island of Mull. A story that could happen to anyone, and it did….it is his story.
SUNSET ON THE LOCH 1965 This can be read as a companion book to And it Came to Pass. It deals mainly with the Gairloch area but it is also a saga of the North West. In 298 pages it describes the Highlands, Outer Hebrides and Skye. A fascinating insight into Highland life. Read the real truth about Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Copies of the books can be ordered from the above. At present, the high cost of printing short runs has to be reflected in the price, but it is hoped that if sufficient orders are received then a longer print run can be achieved and the price reduced.
