GALE Awarded Big Lottery Funding Published: 28/05/2010 08:18:35
Gairloch and Loch Ewe Action Forum (GALE), has just been awarded a Big Lottery Fund grant of £439,057 to enable them to expand their range of community projects and services. GALE already runs a whole host of community projects including the local tourist information centre, a community website, a weekly market, an annual horticultural and craft show and a photography project for people in Wester Ross with mental health illnesses. The grant will be used to further develop these projects and introduce a range of new projects. The bulk of the funding will be spent on purchasing the currently derelict Achtercairn development site in Gairloch where a new multi-purpose community building and garden will be developed. The building will house a range of GALE’s projects including the Gairloch Tourist Information Centre and will include office accommodation, gallery space for local artists and craft producers and exhibition space for community groups and local businesses. The building will be designed with environmental sustainability as a priority, using renewable energy and energy saving technology. GALE General Manager Janet Miles said ‘we are delighted to have been awarded this funding. Our priority over the coming years will be to reduce the seasonality of our local economy, create more year round employment and encourage and promote the buying and selling of locally made products and services. In achieving these aims our overarching ambition is to see more local services owned and managed by the service users and the local community and to develop projects and services that are financially and environmentally sustainable. We very much look forward to this exciting time ahead”. GALE Chairman Angela Urquhart said “our team of staff and volunteers have worked incredibly hard on this project and I’m delighted to see that all our hard work has paid off. There has been a huge groundswell of support for this project within the Gairloch and Loch Ewe area – largely because people recognised the significant economic benefits that sustainable GALE projects would have within the community. We are very gratefully to the many people who demonstrated their support in so many different ways.” Local MP Charles Kennedy said: "I am delighted that the BIG Lottery fund has recognised the hard work which GALE put into its plans and the strength of support from Gairloch and Loch Ewe communities. This project can make a big contribution to the year-round economy of the area; both improving the experience offered to visitors and helping a huge range of local businesses reach a wider market. There will be exciting and challenging years ahead as the plans are turned into reality. GALE's team of staff and volunteers richly deserve this success - and they will continue to have my full support."
